Amazon to End Support for Pre-2012 Kindle Devices

Time flies, and it seems our old tech companions are finally heading toward a permanent retirement. Amazon has officially confirmed that starting May 20th, 2026, it will stop supporting Kindle e-readers and Kindle Fire tablets released in 2012 and earlier. This means that if you’re still rocking a first-generation Kindle or one of the early Fire tablets, your reading experience is about to change significantly.

According to an Amazon spokesperson, these legacy devices will no longer be able to purchase, borrow, or download new content via the Kindle Store. It’s a bittersweet moment for those of us who still cherish the tactile feel of those early e-ink screens. However, it’s not all bad news. If you already have a library of books downloaded to your device, you’ll still be able to read them after the deadline passes. Your account and purchases remain safe and accessible through the Kindle mobile app, the web interface, or any newer Kindle hardware you might own.

One crucial detail to keep in mind: if you decide to factory reset or deregister your old device after the May 2026 deadline, you won’t be able to re-register it. It essentially locks the device out of the Amazon ecosystem for good. This move highlights the inevitable cycle of technology where hardware eventually loses the ability to handle modern security protocols and store infrastructures. While it’s sad to see these pioneers go, it might be the perfect excuse for an upgrade to a crisper, faster display.
