Amazon has inked a significant deal with X-energy and American Electric Power (AEP) to finance the construction of a cutting-edge nuclear energy facility in Indiana. This ambitious project is set to replace the former coal-fueled Breed Generating Station in Fairbanks, Sullivan County. The proposed plant aims to generate up to 960 megawatts of clean, carbon-free energy, which will benefit both the regional power grid and Amazon's extensive data center operations.

While a specific timeline for construction and operation has yet to be announced, Amazon anticipates that the facility could create approximately 1,000 construction jobs and 100 permanent roles. This initiative is a notable step towards decarbonization, with the Indiana facility targeting the deployment of 12 Xe-100 Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). These advanced reactors, though still unproven on a large scale, represent a potential leap forward in nuclear energy technology.

The partnership highlights Amazon's growing commitment to sustainability and its strategy to secure reliable, carbon-free energy sources for its energy-intensive operations. By investing in advanced nuclear technology, Amazon is not only looking to power its own infrastructure but also contribute to a cleaner energy future for the region. This move could signal a broader trend of tech giants investing in next-generation energy solutions to meet their growing power demands while adhering to environmental goals.
