Amazon Aims for Satellite Connectivity with Project Kuiper

Amazon has filed an FCC application for a new satellite constellation, codenamed Project Kuiper, aiming to provide direct-to-device satellite services for voice, messaging, data, and emergency communications. If approved, this ambitious project could reshape mobile connectivity by offering a new layer of service, especially in underserved areas.
Amazon is making a significant move into the satellite internet space with its Project Kuiper initiative. The e-commerce giant recently filed an application with the FCC to launch a new constellation of 5,105 satellites. This ambitious project, codenamed Leo, is designed to offer a direct-to-device satellite service, capable of handling voice, messaging, data, and crucially, emergency services.
If this application gets the green light, Amazon plans to start deploying these satellites in 2028. The company envisions partnering with existing mobile network operators to deliver this service. This approach mirrors the strategy employed by Starlink, which has already partnered with T-Mobile to offer similar direct-to-device capabilities. This move suggests a growing trend in the industry towards leveraging satellite technology to enhance terrestrial mobile networks.
This isn't Amazon's first foray into the satellite arena. Earlier this year, the company announced its acquisition of Globalstar's satellite network. This acquisition included taking over an existing deal to provide direct-to-device satellite services specifically for Apple devices. The Leo constellation, therefore, appears to be a significant expansion and a dedicated effort to build out its own robust satellite infrastructure.
