A recent Pew Research poll reveals that while AI chatbot usage has surged to 49%, a significant majority (63%) believe the technology is advancing too rapidly. Younger generations, in particular, are frequent users but also express the most apprehension about AI's societal impact.
The latest findings from a Pew Research poll paint a complex picture of public sentiment towards artificial intelligence. While nearly half of Americans, 49 percent, report using AI chatbots at least occasionally, a striking 63 percent feel that this rapidly evolving technology is progressing too quickly. This marks a substantial increase in AI chatbot adoption since 2024, when only 33 percent of Americans indicated they had used such tools. ChatGPT, in particular, has seen its usage nearly double since 2023, with 44 percent of respondents now claiming to have used it.
Despite the growing adoption, public trust and optimism surrounding AI remain notably low. Only a modest 16 percent of Americans believe that AI will ultimately have a positive impact on society. Interestingly, the survey highlights a generational divide. Younger demographics, who are more likely to be early adopters and frequent users of AI tools, also tend to hold a more pessimistic outlook regarding AI's future influence. This trend suggests that increased familiarity with AI does not necessarily translate into greater confidence about its societal benefits, leading to a nuanced and somewhat apprehensive public stance on the technology's rapid advancement.
