Apple has begun delivering small background security updates for iOS, iPadOS and macOS to patch components like WebKit between major releases. The feature downloads in the background and requires a quick restart to finish.

Apple has quietly started delivering what it calls Background Security Improvements to iOS, iPadOS and macOS devices. These lightweight patches are designed to address specific system components — most notably the Safari browser and the WebKit framework — without waiting for full operating system updates.

The updates are intended to download and install in the background, as the name suggests. Users will still need to restart their device to complete the installation, but the restart process appears much faster than a standard software update. In hands-on experience, applying the inaugural Background Security Improvement took under a minute on an iPhone, effectively only a brief power cycle compared with the several minutes typical of full updates.

The first Background Security Improvement, released with a WebKit patch, is supported on devices running iOS 26.1, iPadOS 26.1 and macOS 26.1. Apple notes that these mini-releases target system libraries and framework stacks that benefit from more frequent, smaller fixes — a practical approach for addressing security issues that don’t require a full feature or platform update.

Users can check for details in the Privacy & Security section of the Settings menu. Because these are security-focused and relatively small, many people may not notice the download phase, only the quick restart prompt. For those who prefer manual control, Apple’s support documentation lists the changes and platform compatibility.

Overall, Background Security Improvements look like a pragmatic step to shrink the gap between major updates and ongoing security maintenance, helping devices stay protected with less interruption to daily use.
