While Apple's much-talked-about self-driving car program, codenamed Project Titan, never quite materialized, it appears to have left a significant technological legacy. According to Mark Gurman's latest Power On newsletter, the very pursuit of autonomous driving technology pushed Apple to develop the powerful AI processing capabilities that now define its silicon.

Early in the development of its self-driving platform, Apple recognized the critical need for robust on-device AI processing. This realization spurred the creation of specialized chips designed to handle complex artificial intelligence tasks directly on the device, rather than relying solely on cloud-based processing. Although the dedicated car processor was ultimately never completed, the underlying technology developed for it proved invaluable.

This intensive research and development effort culminated in the creation of the Neural Engine. This groundbreaking component made its first appearance with the iPhone X and the A11 Bionic chip. In its nascent stages, the Neural Engine was primarily utilized for computer vision tasks, powering features like Face ID and Animoji. However, its architecture was designed with future AI advancements in mind, laying the groundwork for the sophisticated AI capabilities we see in Apple devices today.

So, while the Apple Car may remain a 'what if' in automotive history, its influence on Apple's silicon development, particularly in the realm of AI, is undeniable. It's a fascinating example of how ambitious projects, even those that don't reach their intended conclusion, can inadvertently lead to significant technological breakthroughs that shape entire product ecosystems.
