Binge App Uses Live Activities to Warn About Jump Scares

The new Binge app utilizes Apple's Live Activities to provide real-time warnings for jump scares in horror movies.
If you love horror movies but absolutely hate the sudden, heart-stopping jump scares that come with them, a new app called Binge might be your new best friend. For many of us, the tension of a scary movie is part of the fun, but the physical shock of a sudden loud noise or a monster popping out can be a bit much. Binge aims to solve this by leveraging Apple’s Live Activities feature to give you a heads-up before the scary stuff happens.
The way it works is quite clever yet simple. When you start a movie, you open the Binge app and hit play. Because it uses Apple’s Live Activities, the app will display a countdown or a warning right on your iPhone’s lock screen or in the Dynamic Island. You’ll see exactly when a jump scare is approaching, giving you time to squint your eyes or brace yourself. You can even adjust the settings to only warn you about the 'major' scares if you still want to feel a little bit of the thrill.
However, there is a small catch for those who love a seamless experience. Binge doesn’t directly integrate with streaming services like Netflix or Max. This means the app doesn't know exactly where you are in the movie unless you tell it. If you pause the film to grab more popcorn or take a quick break, you’ll need to pause the timer in the app as well to keep the warnings synced with the action on screen.
Beyond just being a 'scare-shield,' Binge is positioning itself as a comprehensive movie tracking tool, much like Letterboxd or JustWatch. It offers detailed information about cast and crew, reviews, and even helps you find which streaming platform is currently hosting the title you’re looking for. For parents, it includes content guides that pull data from sources like Rotten Tomatoes to flag violence or profanity.
While the app is free to download on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, the jump scare warning feature requires a subscription. It’s priced at $2 per month or $18 per year, with a $50 lifetime option available for dedicated horror fans. It looks like movie night just got a lot less stressful for the squeamish among us.
