BMW Pilots Humanoid AEON Robots at Leipzig Plant
AI's Take|Why it Matters?
BMW has started a pilot using Hexagon Robotics’ AEON humanoid robots at its Leipzig factory after a successful US trial with Figure AI. The rollout coincides with organizational changes as the programme’s backer moves toward a top leadership role.
BMW Group has quietly introduced humanoid robots to its Leipzig production site as part of a new pilot programme, bringing Hexagon Robotics’ AEON platform onto the shop floor. The move follows an 11-month pilot in the US that used Figure AI’s robots and appears to expand the automaker’s experiments with humanoid automation.
At Leipzig, AEON units are being trialled alongside human teams in controlled tasks designed to assess safety, repeatability and integration with existing assembly workflows. BMW says the intention is to explore how humanoid platforms might complement human workers rather than replace them, particularly in roles that benefit from dexterity and mobility across varied workstations.
The timing is notable: the production chief who advocated for the original humanoid trials in the US is preparing to assume an even more senior role within the company. Industry observers see the Leipzig pilot as a way to scale learnings across BMW’s global operations while continuing to evaluate where humanoids fit within modern factories.
Hexagon Robotics’ AEON is one of several humanoid systems gaining attention for industrial trials. Unlike fixed automation, humanoid robots promise flexibility—able to move between tasks and navigate spaces designed for people. Still, integration challenges remain, including safety certification, software orchestration and long-term cost modelling.
For now, the Leipzig pilot will focus on data gathering and iterative improvements. BMW expects the programme to provide practical insights into human-robot collaboration on real production lines, and the results will likely influence where and how other plants adopt similar systems over the coming years.
