Bumble Tests 'Bee' AI to Nudge Users Toward Dates

Bumble is experimenting with an AI dating assistant named "Bee" that could help users get from profiles to actual dates without endless swiping. Announced alongside the company’s fourth‑quarter results, Bee powers a new experience called "Dates," which Bumble says aims to move matching toward shared values and narratives rather than binary yes/no swipes.

When people opt in to the Dates feature, Bee runs an onboarding chat to gather information about their values, relationship goals, communication style, lifestyle and dating intentions. The assistant then looks for other users who match those signals and notifies both parties when it finds a promising connection, along with a short AI‑generated summary explaining why the match might work.

Bumble’s vision for Bee goes beyond matchmaking. The company is testing ideas like collecting anonymous feedback about past matches and offering date suggestions tailored to interests. There’s also talk of replacing simple swipe decisions with "chapter‑based" profiles that portray life stories in a more textured way — something AI could help analyze and surface to spark conversation.

Bee is currently in internal testing, with a beta launch for Dates expected soon. Bumble isn’t alone: Tinder already uses AI to recommend the most effective photos and runs a "Chemistry" feature that leverages personal answers and camera roll insights. Grindr’s paid tier includes AI summaries of past chats and compatibility stats. All of these experiments are probing whether machine learning can make dating apps feel more effective and less transactional.

Whether Bee will meaningfully improve outcomes for users — leading to safer, more genuine matches and real‑life meetups — remains to be seen. But for dating apps, any feature that keeps users engaged or willing to pay for premium tools looks worth exploring.
