BYD’s New EV Charges Nearly Full in 12 Minutes

China’s BYD is pushing the limits of fast charging with a premium electric model that promises to change expectations around EV refueling. The Z9GT, sold under BYD’s upscale Denza brand, is said to charge to roughly 70 percent in five minutes and approach a full state of charge in about 12 minutes.

BYD first showcased its “flash charging” approach last year, and the new Z9GT refines that system into a production-focused package targeting the luxury segment. The company positions the car as a rival to established European marques, aiming to offer convenience more commonly associated with filling a petrol tank than plugging in an EV.

One notable claim is that these rapid-charge figures hold even in frigid conditions — down to about -30°C — which has historically slowed battery charging and performance. If real-world results match the company’s numbers, such resilience could make high-speed charging more practical across a wider range of climates.

Technical details remain sparse in BYD’s announcement: the exact charging power, battery chemistry, and the infrastructure requirements for delivering those five- to 12-minute sessions weren’t fully disclosed.
