Accessory maker Dbrand, known for its defiant stance against legal challenges, has finally backed down. The company announced the cancellation of its Portal-themed Companion Cube external shell for the Steam Machine, a product that had generated significant buzz among gamers. This move follows a legal intervention by Valve, the developer of Steam and the Portal franchise.

Dbrand has a history of pushing boundaries, famously shipping products that seemingly taunted legal departments and preparing alternative designs when faced with threats of lawsuits, particularly concerning its PS5 plates. However, the company admits it underestimated Valve's resolve in this instance.

In a candid admission, Dbrand CEO Adam Ijaz stated, "There is no further plan. We fucked this one up." This statement underscores the unexpected nature of Valve's legal action and Dbrand's lack of a contingency plan.

As a result of the cancellation, Dbrand will be required to destroy all manufactured Companion Cube shells. The company had previously faced legal pressure from Nintendo and Sony over custom skins and plates for their consoles, often responding with witty remarks and alternative designs. This latest development suggests that Valve was unwilling to tolerate the use of its intellectual property, leading to the abrupt end of the Companion Cube project.

The decision to cancel the product and destroy existing inventory highlights the significant risks associated with using intellectual property without explicit permission, even for companies with a history of challenging such restrictions. Gamers who were eagerly anticipating the unique accessory will now be left without the product.
