Donut Lab Claims to Solve Solid-State Battery Puzzle

Finnish startup Donut Lab claims to have mastered solid-state battery technology and plans to start production later this year. While the industry is skeptical, this development could represent the 'Holy Grail' of EV energy storage.
For years, the tech world has treated solid-state batteries like a mirage in the desert: always visible on the horizon, but never quite within reach. However, a Finnish startup named Donut Lab is shaking things up by claiming they’ve finally cracked the code. A spinoff from Verge Motorcycles, Donut Lab isn't just talking about lab results; they are aiming for mass production as early as this year.
Solid-state batteries are often called the 'Holy Grail' of the electric vehicle industry for good reason. Unlike the lithium-ion batteries in your current phone or car, which use a liquid electrolyte, solid-state versions use solid materials. This change promises significantly higher energy density, much faster charging times, and a higher level of safety because they aren't prone to catching fire. If Donut Lab is right, we could be looking at EVs that charge in minutes and travel twice as far on a single charge.
But before we get too excited, it's worth noting that the expert community is greeting this news with a healthy dose of skepticism. The history of battery tech is littered with 'breakthroughs' that failed to scale outside of a laboratory. Major players like Toyota, Samsung, and QuantumScape have spent billions and decades trying to solve issues like 'dendrites'—tiny needle-like structures that can short-circuit the battery—and the sheer difficulty of manufacturing these at a commercial scale.
Donut Lab’s bold timeline seems almost too good to be true, especially for a relatively small player in a field dominated by giants. However, if they have indeed found a way to bypass the traditional manufacturing hurdles, it would be a massive disruption to the global EV supply chain. For now, it seems like we’ll have to wait and see if the 'Donut' delivers or if it's just another tech dream that’s perpetually two years away.
