In a recent Q1 2026 earnings call, Tesla CEO Elon Musk delivered a significant update that will likely disappoint many Tesla owners. Musk revealed that vehicles equipped with the company's Hardware 3 (HW3) computer will not be capable of achieving unsupervised Full Self-Driving (FSD). This decision effectively locks out a substantial portion of Tesla's fleet, estimated at around 4 million vehicles, from utilizing a feature that has been heavily promoted by Musk for years.

This news is particularly impactful for customers who purchased FSD as an upgrade when buying their vehicles, as they are now unable to use the full capabilities they paid for unless they upgrade their car or its internal hardware. Musk expressed his regret over the situation, stating, "I wish it were otherwise, but Hardware 3 simply does not have the capability to achieve unsupervised..."

The implication is that owners of HW3-equipped Teslas who want to experience unsupervised FSD will need to consider purchasing newer hardware or potentially a new vehicle altogether. This move raises questions about the long-term support and upgradeability of Tesla's current hardware, and it will undoubtedly lead to discussions among owners about the value proposition of the FSD package for older models.
