Retro gaming fans, it looks like your pocket-sized adventures are about to get a whole lot bigger. Evercade has officially pulled the curtain back on its latest handheld hardware, the Evercade Nexus. While the company has recently been focusing on its smaller 'Super Pocket' and 'Micro' lineups, the Nexus is a clear statement that sometimes, size really does matter when it comes to enjoying classic titles.

The standout feature of the Nexus is undoubtedly its screen. Moving away from the 4.3-inch display found on the previous EXP-R model, the Nexus boasts a much larger 5.89-inch panel. It’s not just about the physical size, though; the resolution has received a slight bump to 840x512 pixels. Perhaps more importantly for modern hardware design, the console is transitioning from a 4:3 aspect ratio to a 16:9 widescreen format, which should make the device feel much more ergonomic in the hands of adult gamers.

For those new to the ecosystem, Evercade operates a bit differently than your standard emulation handheld. You won't find an app store here, and you can't simply drag and drop ROMs onto a microSD card. Instead, the Nexus continues the brand's commitment to physical media. It uses proprietary cartridges that come bundled with officially licensed games from legendary publishers. It’s a dream come true for collectors who miss the tactile feel of snapping a cartridge into place before a gaming session.

The Evercade Nexus is set to open for preorders on April 1st, 2026, with a retail price of $199.99. If you're looking to add this to your collection, you'll need a bit of patience, as shipping isn't expected to begin until October 2026. It seems like a long wait, but for a premium way to play curated retro classics on the go, it might just be worth it.
