Fans of the cult sci‑fi series Firefly may finally get more of the universe they’ve been craving. Nathan Fillion announced at AwesomeCon that an animated Firefly series is in advanced development, and many of the original cast are expected to voice their characters.

The reboot is being shepherded by showrunners Tara Butters (Agent Carter, Reaper) and Marc Guggenheim (Legends of Tomorrow, Arrow). Joss Whedon, the show’s original creator, isn’t involved creatively but has reportedly given his blessing. ShadowMachine, an Oscar- and Emmy‑winning animation studio, has produced early concept art, and there’s already a script in place.

Fillion is producing through his Collision33 company alongside 20th Television Animation. During a live taping of his podcast Once We Were Spacemen at AwesomeCon, he and cohosts — including Alan Tudyk — shared the news with fellow Firefly alumni Gina Torres, Morena Baccarin, Summer Glau, Sean Maher and Jewel Staite. The actors present indicated they expect to return to voice their roles for the animated incarnation.

Despite those promising pieces, the project still lacks a distribution partner. Fillion and his cast have been encouraging fans to show demand for the reboot via social channels, hoping a network or streamer will pick it up. That outreach suggests the team is ready to move quickly once a home is secured.

For longtime admirers who have followed Firefly since its brief 2002 run and the later Serenity film, an animated series offers a way to revisit the crew of the transport ship Serenity with fresh visuals and potentially expansive storytelling. Whether the show will explore new missions, deeper character arcs or alternate timelines remains to be seen, but the combination of original cast interest, established showrunners and an experienced animation partner makes this a development worth watching.
