Fortnite Embraces AI for New NPC Personas

Get ready for a more interactive and engaging experience in Fortnite, because Epic Games is ushering in a new era of AI-powered characters. Starting July 30th, Fortnite creators will be able to publish game experiences that feature characters with AI-driven voices and distinct personalities. This exciting development promises to bring a new level of immersion to the popular battle royale game.

Ahead of this major launch, Epic Games has already developed 36 unique characters, each equipped with "consistent voices and personas." These characters are designed to serve as Non-Player Characters (NPCs) that creators can readily incorporate into their own Fortnite island designs. Among the familiar faces that will be getting this AI treatment are long-time Fortnite favorites such as Agent Jonesy, the iconic banana character Peely, the quirky Fishstick, and the beloved Cuddle Team Leader, known for its pink bear mascot head.

This isn't Epic's first foray into AI-powered characters. Last year, the company experimented with an AI-driven Darth Vader NPC. The voice for this character was a digital recreation of James Earl Jones' iconic voice, a collaboration that received approval from Jones' estate. This earlier success likely paved the way for the broader implementation of AI personas we're about to see.
