Garmin CIRQA: A Potential Screen-Free Whoop Competitor?
Kemal Sivri
Garmin has filed a trademark for 'CIRQA,' suggesting a new wearable focused on recovery and stress tracking to compete with Whoop.
It looks like the wearable market is about to get a bit more crowded, especially in the niche of high-end performance tracking. Garmin, a giant in the GPS and fitness world, appears to be preparing a direct competitor to Whoop. According to a recently discovered trademark filing for something called "CIRQA," Garmin is moving beyond its traditional smartwatch designs to focus on deeper physiological insights.
The trademark filing, spotted by Gadgets & Wearables, describes the device as being designed to measure "the body's physical parameters and other physiological data, bio-signals, and bodily behavior." While that sounds like every other Garmin watch on the market, the CIRQA filing goes a step further. It specifically mentions measuring recovery from physical and emotional stress, human alertness levels, and overall performance. This sounds remarkably similar to the data-first, recovery-focused approach that has made Whoop so popular among elite athletes and biohackers.
This isn't the first time we've heard whispers of this device. Earlier this year, Garmin accidentally leaked a store page for a new wearable before quickly pulling it down. When you combine that with the fact that Google (via Fitbit) recently teased its own screen-free band with the help of NBA legend Steph Curry, it’s clear that the big players are noticing Whoop’s massive $575 million funding round and its growing cult following.
Why go screen-free? It seems we are entering an era of "data over display." For many users, the constant notifications and glowing screens of a traditional smartwatch are a distraction. By focusing on a screen-less band, Garmin can prioritize battery life and sensor accuracy, leaving the data analysis to a smartphone app. This also fits perfectly with the rise of AI health coaches, which can process complex metrics in the cloud and give you a simple summary on your phone when you actually want to see it. While we don't have a release date yet, the CIRQA could be the minimalist tool many Mobikolik readers have been waiting for.
