Google is introducing new labels to indicate when ads on its Search, Discover, and YouTube platforms have been created or edited using artificial intelligence. This move aims to bring greater transparency to online advertising.
Google is stepping up its transparency game by implementing new labels that will inform users when advertisements on its major platforms, including Google Search, Google Discover, and YouTube, have been generated or modified with the help of AI. This update, announced recently, is designed to give consumers more insight into the ads they encounter online.
The new disclosure will appear as an "created or edited with AI" label within the "how this ad was made" section. Users can access this information by tapping the familiar three dots or info button located on the ads themselves. This same panel currently allows users to block or report specific advertisements, making the AI disclosure a natural addition to the existing user control features.
According to Google, its own generative AI advertising tools will automatically flag ads created with them. However, for ads generated by AI tools outside of Google's ecosystem, the responsibility for applying the label will fall on the advertisers to do so manually. This distinction highlights the ongoing effort to manage AI-generated content across the digital landscape.
The introduction of these labels is a significant step towards addressing growing concerns about the proliferation of AI-generated content and its potential impact on advertising. By providing clear indications of AI involvement, Google aims to foster a more trustworthy advertising environment for its users, allowing them to make more informed decisions about the content they engage with.
