Google’s New Android Sideloading 'Advanced Flow' Explained

Google outlined an "advanced flow" for installing apps from unverified developers as part of upcoming mandatory developer verification. The process is a one-time setup but includes a mandatory one-day waiting period before sideloading is allowed.
Google has outlined the detailed process users will need to follow to sideload apps from developers who haven’t yet completed the company’s upcoming verification program. The change arrives as Google prepares to require developer verification later this year — a move intended to boost app security but which raised concerns about limiting Android’s long-standing sideloading flexibility.
The company says the new "advanced flow" is a one-off setup rather than a repeated friction every time you want to install an app outside the Play Store. That should reassure people who sideload occasionally or test apps during development: you won’t need to jump through the same hoops for each app.
However, there’s a catch. Part of the advanced flow imposes a mandatory waiting period of one day before an unverified developer’s app can actually be installed. Google positions the delay as a safety measure, intended to give the company time to assess risk and reduce drive-by installations of malicious packages.
Practically, the flow will require users to opt into a distinct process for "advanced" installs, accept clear warnings, and then wait out the cooling-off period. Critics had argued Google’s initial plan — which would have blocked installations from unverified sources entirely — effectively shut down sideloading. This revised approach appears to be a compromise: it retains an avenue for sideloading while adding stronger controls.
For Android users who value openness, the advanced flow is a mixed bag: it maintains access to third-party apps but introduces predictable delays and a formal verification timeline for developers. For average users, it likely means safer installs but slightly less immediacy when trying out apps from outside the Play Store.
