Google Brings OpenTitan Root‑of‑Trust to Chromebooks

Google has started shipping OpenTitan — an open‑source silicon root of trust — in Chromebooks, and it plans to roll the technology out across its data centre fleet. OpenTitan provides a hardware foundation for secure boot, firmware integrity and key management, offering an auditable alternative to proprietary trusted platform modules.

Built as a collaborative, open project, OpenTitan aims to reduce supply‑chain risks and increase transparency about what runs at the lowest levels of a device. By integrating the design into Chromebooks first, Google is putting the technology into end user devices where secure boot and firmware protections matter for everyday threats like tampered firmware or malicious updates.
