Google has launched a pilot program that pays publishers for their contributions to its AI-powered search features, according to a report from The Information. The pilot program reportedly includes around 100 publishers and comes as Google faces scrutiny over the impact of its AI features on web traffic.

Digiday first reported on the pilot program, which began less than a year ago. As part of the test, Google is reportedly paying participating publishers for how much their content contributed to AI Overviews and AI Mode in Search, as well as its Gemini chatbot. One publisher that joined the program when it first started earned over $1 million.

This initiative appears to be Google's attempt to address concerns from content creators who feel their work is being used to train AI models without proper compensation. The tech giant has been under pressure to demonstrate value to publishers, especially as AI-generated summaries in search results can potentially reduce the need for users to click through to original websites.

The program's success and its long-term implications for the digital publishing landscape remain to be seen. However, it signals a significant shift in how Google is approaching the integration of AI into its core products and its relationship with the content ecosystem that fuels it. For publishers, this could represent a new revenue stream, albeit one that is still in its early stages.
