The Google Search Quality team explained that this move is all about protecting the user journey. When a site interferes with the browser's basic functionality, it creates a sense of manipulation and frustration. For many of us, it’s one of those "dark patterns" that makes the internet feel a bit more hostile. Google’s Chris Nelson noted that inserting deceptive pages into a user's browser history has always been against their core essentials, but they are now stepping up enforcement due to an increase in these shady tactics.
