Google Shuts Down Tenor API, Impacting GIF Pickers

Google is shutting down its Tenor API today, which means many popular platforms will lose their integrated GIF-picking features. While the Tenor website itself will remain active, developers will need to find new solutions for GIF integration.
Get ready for a potential shift in how you share animated reactions online, folks! Google is officially pulling the plug on the Tenor API today. This move means that a whole host of popular apps and platforms that you probably use daily are going to have to find new ways to let you search and share those perfect reaction GIFs. Think X (formerly Twitter), Discord, Bluesky, and even WhatsApp – they've all relied on Tenor's API to power their GIF pickers.
Now, before you panic, the Tenor website itself isn't going anywhere. You'll still be able to head over to Tenor.com and browse its massive library of GIFs. Google, which acquired Tenor back in 2018, will also continue to use the service within its own products, like Google Messages. The real impact here is for third-party applications that integrated Tenor's API to provide a seamless GIF experience for their users.
This shutdown essentially forces developers on these platforms to either build their own GIF-searching solutions from scratch or migrate to alternative GIF providers like Giphy or Klipy. It’s a significant change that could lead to a more fragmented GIF landscape, with different apps offering varied GIF selection experiences. So, while the world of GIFs isn't ending, the way many of us access them might just get a little more complicated.
