Google Tests Gemini App for macOS

Google is reportedly testing a Gemini app for macOS that would bring its AI assistant to desktop users and compete with ChatGPT and Claude. The app appears to include a 'Desktop Intelligence' feature that can access screen context and app content to personalize responses.
Google is reportedly experimenting with a Gemini app built for macOS, according to Bloomberg. If released, the app would place Gemini alongside standalone Mac clients from OpenAI and Anthropic, making the desktop a more direct battleground for consumer AI assistants.
Sources suggest the macOS app mirrors Gemini's web capabilities: answering prompts, searching the web, and generating text, images and code. The standout addition may be a feature called "Desktop Intelligence," which would let Gemini reference what's on your screen and pull content from other apps to better tailor responses while the assistant is active.
Desktop context features are not entirely new — both ChatGPT and Claude already offer Mac apps that can read screen context with user permission. Gemini already supports similar screen and camera sharing on mobile devices, so bringing that functionality to macOS would be a logical step. It's unclear, however, whether Gemini would be able to take in-app actions (such as editing a document or sending messages) in the way some competitors can.
Bloomberg also reports that Google is testing the app with non-Google employees, a sign it may be nearing broader availability. The timing aligns with Google and Apple's announced collaboration, which will see Gemini models powering future Apple Intelligence features. That partnership means parts of Gemini's tech could run on macOS regardless of whether Google ships a standalone app.
For Mac users, a native Gemini client would add another option for local AI assistance and tighter OS integration. For Google, it's an opportunity to deepen presence across platforms and compete more directly with existing Mac-focused AI apps. We'll be watching to see whether Google expands testing or announces a public launch timeline.
