Jack Dorsey's Block has introduced Dessa, a new AI model trained exclusively on human conversations to enable realistic voice interactions. The company shared early examples of Dessa's capabilities, showcasing its ability to engage in natural back-and-forth dialogues.
Tech entrepreneur Jack Dorsey, known for co-founding Twitter and leading Block (formerly Square), has unveiled a new artificial intelligence project named Dessa. Developed by Block, Dessa is an AI model designed to engage in realistic voice conversations, having been trained entirely from scratch using only human dialogue. This approach aims to create a more natural and nuanced conversational experience compared to AI models trained on broader text datasets.
To demonstrate Dessa's capabilities, Block shared snippets of conversations the AI has had with humans. These early examples, while showcasing the model's potential for natural back-and-forth interaction, also reveal moments of occasional awkwardness and uncanny resemblances to human speech patterns. In one instance shared by Ragavan Thurairatnam, the lead for Dessa, the AI initially mistook the speaker for someone named "Ronaldo" before settling into a more fluid conversation.
The development of Dessa signifies a move towards more sophisticated and human-like AI interaction. By focusing on speech and conversation data exclusively, Block appears to be aiming for an AI that can understand and respond with greater emotional intelligence and contextual awareness. This could have significant implications for customer service, virtual assistants, and other applications where natural language processing is key. While still in its early stages, Dessa represents an exciting step forward in the quest for truly conversational AI.
