Jo Nesbø Says Netflix Won't Get More Adaptations

Crime novelist Jo Nesbø says he hasn't considered handing more of his works to Netflix after Detective Hole. Unlike Harlan Coben's prolific partnership with the streamer, Nesbø appears cautious about a long-term TV pipeline.
Jo Nesbø, the bestselling Norwegian crime writer behind the Harry Hole novels, appears unlikely to provide Netflix with a steady stream of adaptations after the streamer’s recent Detective Hole project. Speaking about his involvement, Nesbø suggested he hasn’t given a “second thought” to committing more of his catalog to a single platform.
The comparison with Harlan Coben — whose prolific deal with Netflix produced multiple successful series — is inevitable but, according to Nesbø, not apt. While Coben seemed to embrace a long-term creative relationship with the streamer, Nesbø’s comments hint at a more reserved approach: one-off adaptations rather than handing over future rights on autopilot.
Detective Hole brought Nesbø’s gritty, Nordic noir sensibility to a global audience and helped reintroduce the author to viewers unfamiliar with his books. Yet the show’s arrival hasn’t translated into a public commitment from Nesbø to expand the partnership. That could mean Netflix will need to negotiate per-project deals rather than rely on a broad author-level agreement the way it has with other writers.
For viewers and industry watchers, this stance matters. The appetite for good crime drama remains high, and streamers prize recognizable IP. If Nesbø remains selective, his stories could move between platforms or take longer to adapt, potentially increasing competition among studios for individual titles.
In short, while Detective Hole could open doors for further screen versions of Nesbø’s work, don’t assume a steady pipeline to Netflix is locked in. It looks more likely that each adaptation will be evaluated on its own terms — and that could lead to a healthier mix of creative partnerships across the TV landscape.
