LEGO has introduced a new, impressive $200 Donkey Kong arcade machine set, designed by Carl Merriam. While it doesn't play the original game perfectly, it features a functional joystick and a playable mini-game.
LEGO continues to tap into our collective nostalgia with its latest creation: a $200 Donkey Kong arcade machine set. Designed by the talented Carl Merriam, who has previously brought us beloved sets like the Lego Nintendo Game Boy and Piranha Plant, this new addition promises to be a hit for fans of classic gaming.
Merriam, also known for his work on other impressive LEGO projects such as the Lion Knights' Castle and Galaxy Explorer, has once again demonstrated his skill in translating iconic pop culture elements into brick form. This Donkey Kong arcade set is no exception, capturing the essence of the beloved arcade cabinet.
While the set doesn't replicate the exact gameplay of the original Donkey Kong – the character Jumpman (later known as Mario) can't reach the top on his own power – it does offer interactive elements. Much like LEGO's previous $230 pinball machine, this arcade set includes a basic, fully functional game. Players can expect a working joystick, adding a tactile element to the experience.
The set reportedly even managed to gain the approval of Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of Mario and Donkey Kong himself, according to Merriam. This endorsement from the legendary game designer is a significant nod to the accuracy and appeal of the LEGO set.
This release further cements LEGO's strategy of targeting adult fans with complex, display-worthy sets that evoke cherished memories. Following the success of other nostalgic tech-themed builds, the Donkey Kong arcade machine is poised to be a highly sought-after item for collectors and gaming enthusiasts alike. It’s another fantastic example of how LEGO is evolving beyond toys for children, offering intricate builds that appeal to a broader audience.
