Insomniac Games' Marvel's Wolverine for PS5 delivers on its promise of brutally bloody combat, but players might be surprised by the endearing portrayal of Logan himself. The preview offers a glimpse into the game's early hours, showcasing Wolverine's reluctant heroism.
Going into my demo of Marvel's Wolverine, I mainly wanted to try out the game's very bloody combat. And it is delightfully bloody. But after two-ish hours of slashing and stabbing (and parrying!) enemies with Wolverine's claws, I left surprised - despite no previous attachment to the character, I was deeply endeared to Logan himself.
The demo, which was held at Insomniac Games' office in Burbank, California, started at the beginning of the game. In this story, Wolverine is rejoining the mutant task force Team X after a few years away in order to fight for his fellow mutants. He's a reluctant hero with rocky relationships and little memory of his past, which makes him a fascinating character to get to know.
Insomniac has leaned into the visceral nature of Wolverine's powers. The combat is fast, fluid, and incredibly satisfying. Every swipe of the claws feels impactful, leaving behind a trail of gore that’s more stylized than gratuitous. Parrying attacks is key, and successfully deflecting an enemy’s strike opens them up for a brutal counter-attack. It’s a system that rewards aggression and precise timing, making each encounter feel like a desperate struggle for survival.
Beyond the spectacle of the combat, what truly stood out was the character development of Logan. He’s not just a killing machine; he’s a deeply flawed individual grappling with his past and his place in the world. The dialogue and character interactions hint at a rich narrative that explores themes of identity, belonging, and the burden of power. For those who might not be deeply familiar with the comics, this approach makes Wolverine instantly relatable and compelling.
The preview also touched upon the game's environments and overall presentation. Insomniac is known for its stunning visual fidelity, and Marvel's Wolverine appears to be no exception. The environments are detailed and atmospheric, and the character models are incredibly lifelike. It's clear that a lot of care and attention has gone into bringing this corner of the Marvel universe to life on the PS5.
While the full scope of the story remains to be seen, the initial hours of Marvel's Wolverine promise a compelling blend of exhilarating combat and nuanced character study. It’s shaping up to be a must-play title for fans of the genre and the iconic Marvel anti-hero.
