Mercedes-Benz is set to introduce steer-by-wire technology and a new steering yoke in its upcoming EQS sedan refresh. This marks the brand's first move toward removing the physical connection between the steering wheel and the tires.
Mercedes-Benz is preparing to take a massive leap into the future of automotive engineering. The German luxury giant has confirmed that its upcoming refreshed EQS sedan will feature steer-by-wire technology. For those unfamiliar with the term, this means the traditional mechanical link—the steering column and rack—is being replaced by electronic sensors and actuators.
This technology isn't exactly new to the world of transport; it has been a staple in aviation for decades. However, bringing it to a mass-production luxury car is a bold move. By using electronic pulses instead of a metal rod, Mercedes can adjust the steering ratio on the fly. This means you could potentially pull a full U-turn with just a slight nudge of the wheel at low speeds, while maintaining rock-solid stability on the autobahn.
Along with the internal tech, Mercedes is also leaning into the controversial 'yoke' design. Similar to what we’ve seen in some Tesla models, the traditional round steering wheel might make way for a futuristic, rectangular yoke. While yokes have received mixed reviews for being awkward in tight turns, the steer-by-wire system actually solves this problem by eliminating the need for hand-over-hand turning.
