Meta is rolling out a new feature that will allow parents to see the topics their teenagers have been discussing with Meta AI. This move aims to reassure parents about the safety of AI interactions for younger users.
In an effort to address growing concerns about online safety for minors, Meta is introducing a new feature designed to give parents more insight into their teenagers' interactions with AI. Starting soon, parents will be able to view the general topics their teens have been discussing with Meta AI across platforms like Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram over the past week.
Meta explained in a recent blog post that these topics could cover a wide range, from school and entertainment to lifestyle, travel, writing, and health and wellbeing. The feature will be accessible through a new 'Insights' tab within the parental supervision tools, available both in-app and on the web. Parents will be able to delve deeper into these topics, with sub-categories providing more specific details, such as 'fashion' and 'food' within 'Lifestyle,' or 'fitness' and 'mental health' under 'Health and Wellbeing.'
Beyond just visibility, Meta is also partnering with the Cyberbullying Research Center to develop 'conversation starters.' These are intended to prompt open-ended discussions between parents and teens about their AI experiences, aiming to foster dialogue and understanding. More information on these conversation starters can be found on Meta's Family Center website or directly through the new Insights tab.
The company also highlighted its AI Wellbeing Expert Council, a group comprising existing advisory members and new experts in responsible AI, to provide ongoing input on AI experiences for teens. This initiative comes at a time when countries are increasingly scrutinizing and even banning social media for younger users due to safety concerns, including instances where AI has been linked to harmful outcomes for teenagers.
Meta's proactive approach appears to be a response to a broader trend of increased parental oversight and regulatory scrutiny surrounding AI and social media platforms. By offering transparency into AI conversations, Meta hopes to build trust and demonstrate its commitment to teen safety in the evolving digital landscape.
