Meta has announced that the final major OS update for its Quest 2 and Quest Pro VR headsets will be version 213, released by March 2027. While feature development will cease, the company will continue to provide security patches and critical bug fixes through the end of 2027.
Meta is officially signaling the sunsetting of its Quest 2 and Quest Pro virtual reality headsets, with the company announcing that the last major operating system update for these devices will be version 213, slated for release by March 2027. This move effectively marks the end of new feature development for these once-flagship VR devices.
Following the v213 update, Meta will shift its focus to maintaining the existing platform. This means that while no new features will be introduced, users can still expect security patches and essential bug fixes to be rolled out until the end of 2027. This extended support period aims to ensure a stable experience for existing users and developers.
Furthermore, Meta has confirmed that developers will be able to submit applications supporting the Quest 2 or Quest Pro up until December 2027. This provides a crucial window for developers to continue supporting their existing titles and potentially release final updates or content for these platforms.
The company is now positioning the Quest 3 and an upcoming Quest 3S as the new baseline for Meta VR gamers. This strategic shift comes as Meta prepares for the launch of its next generation of VR glasses, expected in the spring of 2027. The Quest 2 and Quest Pro undeniably played a pivotal role in bringing VR to a wider audience, and their transition to a maintenance phase reflects the natural evolution of technology and Meta's ongoing commitment to advancing the VR landscape.
