Microsoft Adds Anthropic and OpenAI Models to Copilot Chat

Microsoft has broadened the choice for customers in its Frontier program, giving them the option to run Anthropic's Claude models as well as OpenAI's models inside Copilot Chat. The change is pitched as a win for flexibility, particularly for teams tackling extended knowledge-work tasks that need continuity and context over time.

Copilot Chat, which sits at the heart of Microsoft’s collaboration and productivity push, will now support multiple backend models depending on customer preference. Microsoft says this lets organizations match workloads to the model that best fits their accuracy, safety, or cost needs — and makes it simpler to switch or experiment without ripping out the Copilot integration.

Practically, this means a user starting a complex project in Copilot can keep interactions coherent across sessions even if different models are used for different phases. Microsoft framed the update as targeting long-running tasks such as research threads, policy drafting, or multi-step analysis where maintaining a persistent understanding matters more than isolated prompt-response bursts.

For companies in regulated industries or with strict data-handling rules, being able to nominate a preferred model provider could matter for compliance and governance. Microsoft’s approach keeps the Copilot interface consistent while surfacing model choice behind the scenes, which should reduce friction for IT and product teams evaluating model behavior.

Anthropic’s Claude and OpenAI’s family of models have different strengths and safety guardrails; exposing both through the same Copilot framework may speed enterprise adoption by offering a practical way to compare real-world performance.
