Microsoft Ditches Claude Code for Copilot CLI

Microsoft, which began offering its developers access to Anthropic's AI coding tool, Claude Code, back in December, is now reportedly planning to significantly reduce its usage. This initiative was initially aimed at encouraging non-coding employees like project managers and designers to experiment with coding. Sources indicate that Claude Code has been quite popular within Microsoft over the past six months.

However, it appears that this popularity has led to a strategic pivot. Microsoft is said to be preparing to revoke most of its Claude Code licenses. Instead, the company plans to steer a large number of its developers towards using its own Copilot CLI (Command Line Interface).

While Claude Code has been a valuable tool, the decision to favor Copilot CLI suggests Microsoft's commitment to its in-house AI development. This shift could be driven by a variety of factors, including a desire to consolidate AI tools, better integrate coding assistance with existing Microsoft workflows, or to leverage the specific capabilities of Copilot CLI.
