Microsoft has significantly increased the prices of its Surface Pro and Laptop lineups, with base models jumping by $500. This drastic move comes as a direct response to the worsening global memory crisis.

If you were planning to pick up a new Microsoft Surface device anytime soon, you might want to double-check your budget. Microsoft has just implemented a massive price hike across its Surface lineup, and the numbers are quite startling. The 13-inch Surface Pro 11 and the 13.8-inch Surface Laptop 7, which previously started at $999, are now listed at $1,499. That is a flat $500 increase for the entry-level experience.

The culprit behind this sudden surge is what some are calling "RAMageddon." A global shortage of RAM is sending shockwaves through the tech industry, and Microsoft seems to be among the first major hardware players to pass those costs directly to the consumer. While price fluctuations are common in tech, a 50% jump on a base model is almost unheard of for a product that has already been on the market for some time.

Earlier last year, Microsoft had already begun phasing out the more affordable $999 versions of these devices, steering customers toward the $1,199 models that offered more storage. At the time, it looked like a strategic move to make room for the smaller 12-inch and 13-inch Surface variants. However, the current RAM crisis has effectively erased those price brackets. Even the newer, smaller devices aren't safe from the rising costs of components.

For tech enthusiasts and professionals who rely on the Surface ecosystem, this creates a difficult situation. The Surface line has always been positioned as a premium Windows experience, but at a $1,500 starting point, it enters a whole new tier of competition. It appears that as long as memory remains scarce and expensive, the era of the "affordable" flagship Surface might be on a long-term hiatus.
