NASA Fixes Outlook Glitch for Artemis II Crew

NASA's Mission Control successfully resolved a software issue involving Microsoft Outlook on Commander Reid Wiseman's Surface Pro during the Artemis II mission.
Even when you are hurtling through space toward the Moon, you can't escape the occasional frustrations of modern software. During the Artemis II mission's historic journey, Commander Reid Wiseman found himself facing a very relatable "Earth problem": his Microsoft Outlook stopped working. In a moment captured during NASA's live stream, Wiseman reported to Mission Control that he had two versions of the app on his device, and unfortunately, neither was functioning.
The device in question is a Microsoft Surface Pro, referred to by NASA as a Personal Computing Device (PCD). It seems that even the most advanced training can't prepare you for the quirks of office productivity suites when you're thousands of miles away from the nearest IT desk. Wiseman’s deadpan delivery of the issue to Mission Control reminded us all that technology, no matter how sophisticated, still has its "Windows moments."
Thankfully, NASA’s ground team is essentially the ultimate IT department. Flight director Judd Frieling confirmed during a press conference that Mission Control had to remotely access the device to clear up the confusion. Frieling noted that such issues are "not uncommon," even in the high-stakes environment of lunar exploration. The fix was applied successfully, ensuring the crew stays connected with their families and teams back home.
While the mission’s primary goals involve testing the Orion spacecraft and preparing for future lunar landings, these small human moments highlight the reality of living and working in space. It’s comforting to know that even NASA astronauts have to deal with redundant app icons and software glitches. Now that the email situation is sorted, the crew can get back to the slightly more pressing business of orbiting the Moon.
