OpenAI Acquires AI Financial Planning Startup Hiro

OpenAI is continuing its recent trend of rapid expansion through acquisitions. The company has officially acquired Hiro Finance, a startup known for its AI-powered financial planning tools. This move marks OpenAI's second acquisition in just one month, following its purchase of the media company Technology Business Programming Network (TBPN) earlier in April.

While the financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed, reports suggest this is primarily an "acquihire," focusing on bringing Hiro’s specialized talent into the OpenAI fold. Hiro’s founder, Ethan Bloch, confirmed the news on LinkedIn, stating that the company’s existing products will cease operations on April 20. Users have been given a deadline of May 13 to migrate their data before it is permanently deleted from Hiro’s servers.

The integration of Hiro’s expertise appears to be a strategic move to bolster ChatGPT’s capabilities in the personal finance sector. Bloch noted that for decades, personalized financial guidance has been either too expensive or too difficult to access, and he believes ChatGPT is finally positioned to change that dynamic. By bringing financial planning experts on board, OpenAI seems to be aiming for a more versatile AI assistant that can handle complex fiscal tasks.

This aggressive acquisition strategy comes at a time when OpenAI is facing intense competition from rivals like Anthropic and Google. Despite the company’s massive revenue growth, the path to long-term profitability remains a challenge.
