OpenAI Enterprise AI Head Departs After Five Months

Barret Zoph, OpenAI's head of enterprise AI sales, has left the company after only five months. Zoph had returned to OpenAI in January with a mandate to lead its enterprise push.
Barret Zoph, who was leading OpenAI's charge into enterprise AI sales, has departed the company just five months after his return. Zoph rejoined OpenAI in mid-January, taking on a significant role with the directive to focus on key revenue drivers like enterprise solutions and coding, a strategic shift for the company as it prepares for a potential IPO.
His return followed a period where he served as co-founder and CTO of Thinking Machines Lab, a rival AI firm established by former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati. Zoph's departure comes at a critical juncture for OpenAI, which has been emphasizing a more focused approach, aiming to move away from what it termed "side quests" to concentrate on core business objectives. The company confirmed Zoph's exit to The Verge, though further details regarding the circumstances of his departure were not immediately available.
This move raises questions about the internal dynamics and strategic direction at OpenAI, especially concerning its enterprise ambitions. The company has been making significant strides in AI development, but retaining key leadership, particularly in revenue-generating divisions, appears to be a persistent challenge.
