Sony has begun rolling out an upgraded version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) for the PS5 Pro, and several high-profile games are among the first to receive the improvement. The update covers titles such as Cyberpunk 2077, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Silent Hill 2, Monster Hunter Wilds and others — all benefiting from a refined upscaling pipeline designed to reduce common visual artifacts.

Testing from outlets like Digital Foundry suggests this iteration of PSSR addresses several longstanding issues. Players and reviewers previously noted shimmering, flickering, and inconsistent detail during motion when relying on upscaling. According to early impressions, the new PSSR reduces those distractions and produces crisper textures and more stable edges without introducing new noticeable artifacts.

This upgrade represents one of the first tangible outcomes of Project Amethyst, the collaboration between Sony and AMD aimed at improving console rendering through custom AI and upscaling techniques. While Sony and AMD have been hinting at the potential of this partnership, rolling refined PSSR into real-world titles gives a clearer picture of how algorithmic upscaling can raise perceived resolution on next-gen hardware.

For players, the most immediate benefit should be visual consistency: games that previously relied on temporal or spatial tricks to hit performance goals may now look cleaner at the same frame rates. That matters for open-world and fast-paced games where motion and fine detail are frequently at odds with performance targets.

As the rollout continues, expect more developers to adopt the improved PSSR where appropriate. If you own a PS5 Pro and play any of the supported titles, you may notice the difference after the update — particularly in scenes with foliage, distant detail, or fast camera movement.
