Reddit to Prompt Some Accounts to 'Verify Humanness'

Reddit will occasionally ask accounts that look automated to prove they’re human using on-device methods like Face ID or passkeys. The move aims to curb bot-driven spam while preserving user anonymity.
Reddit CEO Steve Huffman outlined a new, more targeted approach to fighting bots that will prompt a subset of accounts to "verify humanness." The company says these checks will be rare and aimed at accounts that show signs of automated or bot-like behavior rather than a blanket identity verification for everyone.
According to Huffman, most users won’t see the prompts. When they do appear, verification will initially rely on on-device signals such as Face ID and passkeys. Reddit says it’s also exploring other options — including third-party solutions like World ID — but is positioning the effort as a way to confirm a human is behind an account without tying that proof to a person’s real-world identity.
Accounts that fail the humanness check could be restricted from the platform. At the same time, Reddit will mark legitimate automated tools with an "[APP]" label and simplify reporting for suspected malicious bots. The company is trying to balance reducing bot-driven spam with preserving the relative anonymity that many users expect on Reddit.
Huffman acknowledged the growing pressure from age-verification laws and noted Reddit is "exploring" ways to comply without compromising privacy. The update also clarifies that Reddit won’t broadly police AI-generated content created and shared by real users — the focus is on detecting automated posting at scale.
For readers, the change could mean fewer bot floods and a cleaner feed, but it may also raise questions about how on-device verification will work in practice. Reddit’s approach seems designed to be conservative: confirm humanness, not unmask identities, while adapting to a web where agentic AI and bot networks are increasingly common.
