Rivian to Supply 50,000 Robotaxis to Uber in Major Deal

Rivian and Uber have announced a sizable commercial partnership that could reshape how ride-hailing fleets evolve over the next decade. Under the agreement, Rivian will provide up to 50,000 R2 robotaxis to Uber in a deal valued at $1.25 billion, with an initial tranche of 10,000 vehicles scheduled for deployment in San Francisco and Miami by 2028.

The plan envisions Uber purchasing an additional 40,000 robotaxis through 2030 if certain autonomous‑driving and regulatory milestones are met. Uber has already committed $300 million as an initial investment, though that funding is subject to approvals tied to autonomous performance and local rules.

Rivian’s stock reacted strongly to the news, jumping about 10% intraday before settling closer to a 4% gain—an indicator of market optimism about the company’s role in the robotaxi market. For Rivian, the deal bolsters its push to expand beyond consumer EVs and into commercial autonomous fleets.

Uber isn’t placing all its robotaxi bets with one supplier. The rideshare giant recently revealed its own in‑house robotaxi efforts—built in design partnership with Lucid and Nuro—and maintains separate collaborations with Nvidia and Waymo to deploy software‑driven and L4-capable autonomous vehicles across multiple cities.

For riders and cities, the Rivian tie-up signals a stepping stone toward more widespread autonomous ride-hailing. Uber plans to scale robotaxi operations across 25 major cities in the U.S., Canada and Europe by 2031, though timelines will depend heavily on regulation, safety validation and local infrastructure.

Rivian meanwhile continues to promote the R2 lineup for consumers as well, with the R2 EV due this spring starting at about $58,000 and a more affordable variant planned for 2027. The partnership with Uber gives Rivian a high‑visibility channel to showcase its vehicles in commercial service, while Uber gains another manufacturing partner on its path to a mixed autonomous fleet.
