Roblox is restructuring its platform into three distinct account tiers—Kids, Select, and Roblox—to enhance child safety and content moderation.

Roblox is about to undergo one of its most significant transformations yet. While we’ve seen the platform push for age verification in the past, the latest update takes things a step further by introducing mandatory, age-segregated account tiers. Starting in mid-May, the massive gaming universe will be divided into three distinct worlds: Roblox Kids, Roblox Select, and the standard Roblox experience.

For those of us following the platform's evolution, this move seems like a direct response to growing concerns over child safety and the types of content younger players encounter. In the US, the breakdown is quite specific. The "Kids" tier is designed for ages 5-8, offering the most restricted environment where chat is off by default and only the mildest experiences are accessible. The "Select" tier covers ages 9-15, allowing for a bit more freedom—like chatting with trusted friends—while still keeping a lid on more mature content. Finally, once a user hits 16, they transition into a full Roblox account, though restricted content (18+) remains locked until a final verification.

What happens if you don't want to scan your face or upload an ID? Well, Roblox is making it clear that verification is no longer just an "extra" feature. By June, any user who hasn't completed the age check will be automatically funneled into the Kids-like experience. This means no chat and no access to games rated higher than "Mild." It’s a bold move that essentially forces the hand of its massive user base to prove who they are if they want the full experience.

On the developer side, Roblox is introducing some hurdles there too. Creators will now need to verify their identity and pay a $5 monthly fee for "Roblox Plus" to show their commitment. The idea is that developers who pay and verify are less likely to mislabel their games. To back this up, AI moderation will be scanning games in real-time to ensure they match their maturity labels. It’s an ambitious plan, and while it won't be perfect from day one, it shows Roblox is finally getting serious about its reputation as a safe digital playground.
