Samsung Halts Galaxy Z TriFold Sales After Three Months

Samsung will reportedly end sales of the Galaxy Z TriFold in South Korea on March 17, just three months after the device first became available, according to a Dong-A Ilbo report. Engadget has contacted Samsung for confirmation; the company has not publicly verified the claim.

In the US, the TriFold—released in January—appears likely to remain on store pages only until remaining inventory is exhausted. When available at retail, the handset was priced at nearly $3,000, making it one of Samsung's most expensive consumer phones.

From the start, the TriFold felt like a limited-run experiment rather than a mainstream flagship. Samsung reportedly sold the handset in small, time-limited batches through its website, with each allotment selling out within minutes. Industry figures cited by Dong-A Ilbo suggest only about 3,000 units moved across the first two distributions, and Samsung did not send review samples to the press.

Sources characterize the TriFold as a technology showcase: an opportunity to demonstrate advanced folding hardware and engineering, but not a product with attractive profit margins. Rising component prices—particularly for DRAM and NAND flash—are said to have squeezed margins to the point that large-scale production made little financial sense. Secondary-market demand briefly pushed resale prices in South Korea to nearly three times the device's MSRP.

Hands-on time with the TriFold showed a well-built device that nonetheless wasn't designed for a full production lifecycle. The phone follows Samsung's earlier foldable experiments, including the Galaxy Fold, which had a troubled rollout in 2019 before the form factor matured.
