Sony is Scaling Back Features on Bravia TV Guides

It looks like some Sony Bravia TV owners are in for a bit of a surprise next month, and not necessarily the good kind. Sony has announced that it will be scaling back certain features within its TV guide and program guide displays. These changes, which were first spotted by Cord Cutters News, are set to take effect in late May 2025 and will impact select Bravia models released between 2023 and 2025.

If you are one of the many users who still rely on an over-the-air (OTA) TV antenna to catch local broadcasts, you might notice the guide looking a bit more barren soon. Sony is removing channel logos and thumbnail images from the program descriptions in the built-in TV guide. Furthermore, the guide will now only display programs from recently watched channels, meaning you won't get a full overview of everything available at a glance. Depending on the specific channel, some program information might not even be displayed at all.

The changes aren't just limited to antenna users. Those who use external set-top boxes will also see a shift in their user experience. The dedicated 'Set Top Box TV' menu is being phased out, replaced by a more generic 'Control' menu. Just like the antenna guide, this new setup will no longer feature program thumbnail images, making the interface feel a bit more utilitarian and less visual than before.

Sony hasn't provided an official explanation for why these features are being removed. While streaming and cable TV dominate the market today, a significant number of users still value the free, high-quality signals provided by OTA antennas. Removing visual aids like logos and thumbnails might seem like a small detail, but it definitely makes navigating live TV a bit more cumbersome for those who haven't fully cut the cord.
