Sony Brings AI Upscaling to Standard PS5 with QSSR Tech

Great news for PlayStation 5 owners who don't have the Pro model! Sony has just announced a new AI upscaling technology that's making its way to the regular PS5. Dubbed Quick Spectral Super Resolution, or QSSR for short, this feature is being touted as a "new performance tier of AI upscaling" and is a direct result of Sony's ongoing Project Amethyst work with AMD. It looks like Sony is committed to bringing advanced visual enhancements to its entire console lineup.

While Sony considers PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), which is already available on the PS5 Pro, to be the "gold standard," QSSR is designed to bring a significant visual upgrade to the standard PS5. Early hands-on impressions suggest that QSSR might not be as lightning-fast as PSSR, likely because the standard PS5 lacks the dedicated machine learning silicon found in its Pro sibling. However, gamers can still anticipate a noticeable improvement, with expectations leaning towards an upscaled resolution close to 1440p. This means sharper images and potentially smoother gameplay, even on the original PS5 model. It's a smart move by Sony to leverage AI to boost the graphical capabilities of existing hardware, making the gaming experience even more immersive for a wider audience.

This move also highlights the growing importance of AI in the gaming industry. As hardware becomes more powerful, developers are finding innovative ways to push the boundaries of visual fidelity. QSSR is a prime example of how AI can be used to intelligently upscale lower-resolution images, breathing new life into older games and ensuring that new titles look their absolute best. For those of us who love our standard PS5, this is a fantastic update that promises to enhance our gaming sessions without needing to buy new hardware. Get ready for some crisper visuals!
