SpaceX and AI company Cursor have announced a new partnership that could lead to a substantial acquisition, with SpaceX potentially buying the AI coding firm for $60 billion later this year. The collaboration aims to create what SpaceX describes as 'the world’s best coding and knowledge work AI'.

In a post on X, SpaceX stated, 'SpaceXAI and @cursor_ai are now working closely together to create the world’s best coding and knowledge work AI.' This partnership allows SpaceX to either invest $10 billion into Cursor, known for its AI coding tool, or acquire the company outright. The timeline for a potential full acquisition remains unclear, but the deal highlights the increasing integration within Elon Musk's diverse business empire.

This development follows SpaceX's earlier acquisition of xAI, Elon Musk's artificial intelligence company which also oversees the social media platform X. SpaceX itself is reportedly preparing for a historic initial public offering (IPO) this summer, which is anticipated to be the largest in history.

Cursor, which has been reportedly in talks to raise its own $2 billion funding round, is celebrated for its AI coding tool that has become a preferred platform for many developers. The tool enables users to leverage models from various leading AI companies, including OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, and xAI.

Cursor expressed in a statement that the partnership with SpaceX will significantly 'accelerate our model training efforts' by addressing past infrastructure bottlenecks. 'We've wanted to push our training efforts much further, but we've been bottlenecked by compute,' the company explained. 'With this partnership, our team will leverage xAI's Colossus infrastructure to dramatically scale up the intelligence of our models for coding and beyond.' This strategic alliance underscores the intense competition and rapid advancements in the AI sector, particularly in tools designed for software development and knowledge work.
