Spotify has launched an "Exclusive Mode" for its Windows app that gives the player full control of your PC's audio pipeline to reduce resampling and system interference. The feature is rolling out to Premium users now, with macOS support promised in a future update.

Spotify is introducing a new Exclusive Mode for its Windows desktop app that aims to improve playback fidelity by handing exclusive control of your computer’s audio output to the Spotify client. The company says many PCs change audio before it reaches an external DAC or headphones — resampling, mixing in system sounds, or altering volume — which can degrade the original file. Exclusive Mode is designed to stop those tweaks and deliver what Spotify calls "Bit Perfect playback."

At launch, the setting is limited to Spotify Premium subscribers on Windows, and it appears as an option in the app's audio settings. When enabled, Spotify prevents the operating system and other apps from interfering with the stream, ensuring audio data is passed unchanged when your hardware supports it. For listeners using high-quality DACs or serious headphones, this should mean the sound you hear is closer to the source file.

Spotify notes that Exclusive Mode will be coming to the Mac app in a future release, though no firm timeline has been given. The company’s announcement focuses on clarity for audiophiles and users with dedicated audio gear who want to avoid unwanted processing. It’s also a reminder that not all playback issues are streaming- or file-related; system-level audio handling can play a big role.

For everyday listeners using typical laptop speakers or Bluetooth headphones, the difference may be subtle or even nonexistent. But for those with external DACs, USB audio interfaces, or advanced audio setups, Exclusive Mode could be a useful option to minimize alterations and hear tracks as intended. If you’re a Premium user on Windows and care about the purest playback, it’s worth toggling on and doing a quick A/B test.
