Deutsche Telekom CEO Tim Höttges expressed skepticism about SpaceX's Starlink Mobile plans to become a major US carrier. Höttges highlighted the immense cost, estimating at least $200 billion, required for spectrum acquisition and network buildout.
Deutsche Telekom CEO Tim Höttges has thrown some cold water on SpaceX's ambitious plans for Starlink Mobile to establish itself as a significant player in the US mobile market. During a recent earnings call, Höttges stated that while he takes Elon Musk's venture "super serious," the financial hurdles are immense, estimating a staggering cost of at least $200 billion.
Höttges pointed out the significant difference in spectrum holdings, noting that SpaceX has acquired 76 megahertz while Deutsche Telekom possesses 400. He elaborated that securing a comparable spectrum position would require triple-digit billions. "If he has the money, go for it," Höttges remarked, before emphasizing the subsequent monumental task of building a network, contrasting it with Deutsche Telekom's existing infrastructure of 85,000 towers.
This perspective from a major telecommunications player suggests that while satellite-based mobile services are a fascinating technological frontier, the path to competing directly with established terrestrial carriers is fraught with enormous financial and logistical challenges. It will be interesting to see how SpaceX addresses these concerns and whether its innovative approach can overcome the sheer scale of investment required.
