Tado Launches 2nd Gen Smart Thermostat X, Eyes Google Nest Users

When Google made the somewhat ignominious decision to exit the European thermostat market last year, it pointed its users towards Tado. Now, the German-based smart home company is launching its Smart Thermostat X (2nd gen), and it's clearly aiming to attract those European Nest users who haven't already found a new solution.

Tado co-founder and managing director Christian Deilmann mentioned to The Verge that Google's decision to shut down servers for its older thermostat models actually drove 'significant sales' for Tado. While the third-generation Nest thermostat has a much larger market share in Europe, Deilmann believes that Google's future support for even that model is uncertain, seeing the writing on the wall for its smart home heating products.

The new Tado Smart Thermostat X (2nd gen) comes equipped with Matter-over-Thread technology. This means it's designed to be compatible with a wide range of smart home ecosystems, offering a more future-proof solution for consumers. The company is likely hoping that this enhanced interoperability, coupled with the lingering dissatisfaction from Google's previous market exit, will be enough to convince users to switch.

This move by Tado highlights a growing trend in the smart home industry where companies are looking to capitalize on the missteps of larger players. As consumers become more invested in their smart home setups, the reliability and long-term support offered by manufacturers are becoming increasingly critical factors in purchasing decisions.
