In a significant leadership change, Apple CEO Tim Cook announced today that he will be stepping down from his role on September 1st. Current Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, John Ternus, is set to take the reins as the new CEO of the tech giant. Cook will be moving into a new position as the executive chairman of Apple’s Board of Directors. The company confirmed that this transition was unanimously approved by the board, and Cook will dedicate the summer months to ensuring a smooth handover of his responsibilities.

“It has been the greatest privilege of my life to be the CEO of Apple and to have been trusted to lead such an extraordinary company,” Cook shared in a statement. He expressed his deep affection for Apple and his gratitude for the opportunity to collaborate with a team of highly talented individuals dedicated to creating exceptional products and services.

Cook took over as CEO in 2011 after the passing of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. During his tenure, he guided the company through the post-iPhone and iPad era, spearheading the launches of iconic products like AirPods, Apple Watch, and Vision Pro. He also significantly expanded Apple's service offerings with Apple TV+ and Apple Music. While recognized for his operational prowess, Cook has sometimes faced criticism regarding a perceived lack of the groundbreaking product vision associated with Jobs.

In contrast, John Ternus has been a key figure in product development since joining Apple in 2001. He ascended to VP of Hardware Engineering in 2013 and took on a senior executive role in 2021. Ternus recently played a prominent role in the unveiling of the MacBook Neo, a device noted for its impressive performance and value proposition.

“I am profoundly grateful for this opportunity to carry Apple’s mission forward,” Ternus stated. He highlighted his long tenure at Apple, working under both Steve Jobs and Tim Cook, and his role in shaping products that have impacted global interaction.

Cook also released a heartfelt community letter reflecting on his time as CEO, expressing deep gratitude to the Apple community for their trust and engagement throughout his leadership. He emphasized his belief that Ternus is the ideal leader to guide Apple into its next chapter.
