If you happen to be strolling through the sunny streets of Los Angeles, you might catch a glimpse of a familiar yet futuristic silhouette. Uber and Volkswagen have officially kicked off on-road testing for their ID. Buzz robotaxi fleet. This move brings their multi-year strategic partnership one step closer to reality, as the iconic electric microbuses are now navigating LA traffic with safety drivers behind the wheel.

The technology powering these eye-catching vans comes from MOIA America, the US division of Volkswagen's self-driving subsidiary. The plan is ambitious: Uber and MOIA intend to deploy thousands of ID. Buzz vehicles across the US over the next ten years. While Los Angeles serves as the pilot city, the companies have their sights set on multiple US markets if the initial phase proves successful. For now, the timeline remains steady, with public rides—still featuring safety drivers—expected to launch in late 2026.

The ID. Buzz itself is a modern, electric reimagining of the classic "hippie van" that defined an era. With its sliding doors and seating for up to seven passengers, it seems like a perfect fit for Uber's group travel needs. Beyond its nostalgic charm, the EV boasts a range of up to 234 miles per charge, making it a practical choice for urban ride-hailing duties.

This partnership highlights Uber's strategic shift since selling its in-house self-driving unit in 2020. Instead of building the tech from scratch, Uber is now the ultimate aggregator for autonomous vehicle (AV) companies. They already offer autonomous rides via Waymo in cities like Phoenix and Austin, and have deals lined up with Rivian, NVIDIA, and Zoox. By adding the ID. Buzz to the mix, Uber is diversifying its fleet with vehicles that people actually want to be seen in.
